SPORTS JOURNALISM
AUG. 2017 - PRESENT

Football Coverage

The 2019 college football season was my second and final as a Iowa football beat reporter for The Daily Iowan. In that time, I covered Miguel Recinos' walk-off field goal against Nebraska in 2018, a win over top-10 Minnesota in 2019 and Iowa's 2019 Holiday Bowl win over USC. As a part of the four-person football team, I wrote weekly stories specifically for the Friday Pregame edition, including a cover story every four weeks. These in-depth feature stories required weeks of planning, interviewing and writing and helped to build up my longform writing skills. Following my graduation from the University of Iowa, I joined the team at HawkeyeNation.com in August to continue my coverage of Iowa football.
Wrestling Coverage

I spent two seasons covering the Iowa wrestling program as a beat reporter for different outlets. As a remote reporter in early 2019, I travelled to Pittsburgh, PA to cover the NCAA DI Championships as the Daily Iowan's lone print reporter and cranked out 11 full-length stories in three days. Being on the ground for Spencer Lee's second-straight championship was one of my favorite college experiences. I returned to Iowa City and covered the first half of the 2019 season for the Daily Iowan, before graduating and moving over to FloWrestling in December as a freelance reporter.
In December 2019, I travelled to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl with one other print reporter, two TV reporters and two photographers. We followed the team around on an active naval ship and for a trip to a zoo before ending the week with a 49-24 Hawkeye win over USC. I participated in a pregame show (shown above) and utilized my multi-media journalism skills both on TV and in taking video following the game.

In November, I spent four weeks researching and interviewing for a longform profile on Iowa's head coach, Tom Brands. I was able to speak with Brands at length one-on-one, as well as had the opportunity to sit down with wrestling legend Dan Gable. I designed the entire story in the paper, and it is the project I am most proud of from my time at the Daily Iowan.
